BMW wants Z4 replacement before 2020

BMW wants Z4 replacement before 2020

BMW Z5 / BMW Toyota sports car rendering / Automedia

Co-developed with Toyota

BMW has announced intentions to introduce a Z4 successor
before the end of the decade.

Speaking with

Automotive
News Europe

at the Geneva Motor Show, BMW head of development Klaus Fr hlich
expressed his desire to launch a replacement for the Z4 within the next five
years, acknowledging the company could share development costs with Toyota as
part of the ongoing collaboration between the two.

Fr hlich went on to specify the segment for
two-seater roadsters is shrinking and that the world's largest car market,
China, is "not interested in roadsters." As a consequence, a Z4 successor is
not high on BMW's list of priorities since such as model would only bring
modest sales especially if we take into account that last year the Bavarian
marque sold only 5,300 units (down by 11 percent) of the Z4 in Europe and 2,150 cars (down
by 13 percent) in United States.

According to the latest

gossip

,
the co-developed sportscar will use the Z5 moniker for BMW's version and has
reached conceptual phase. It will allegedly use a carbon fiber tub just like
the i3 & i8 duo and will adopt a conventional soft top but could possibly
spawn a fixed roof coupe version later during its lifespan. If all goes according to plan, the BMW Z5 and
Toyota's version will be out around 2017.

2016 Chevrolet Spark teased ahead of April 2 reveal

2016 Chevrolet Spark teaser (modified)

Billed as an all-new model

Chevrolet has released a teaser image for the 2016 Spark set
to receive its world premiere on April 2nd.

Billed as being an all-new model, the 2016MY Spark has
already been caught on camera completely
undisguised about a month ago adopting an evolutionary design compared to
the outgoing model. It will be based on the Opel
Karl / Vauxhall Viva duo but unlike the other two it will have the rear
door handles mounted near the C pillars just like the current car.

Chevrolet has not released any technical specifications but
these should mirror its European brothers so expect power to come from a
naturally aspirated three-cylinder 1.0-liter engine with 75 HP (55 kW). The
Karl/Viva weighs 939 kg (2,070 lbs) and is offered exclusively with a five-speed
manual transmission and consumes only 4.3 liters / 100 km (66 mpg UK or 55 mpg
UK), with corresponding CO2 emissions of 99 g/km.

It should be 3680mm long and provide a 2385mm wheelbase
while the trunk capacity will likely stand at almost 1,000 liters with the rear
seats folded. Among the available options will include cruise control, heated
front seats, sun roof, park assist, infotainment system and a heated steering
wheel.

The 2016 Chevrolet Spark will be revealed on April 2 at the
Seoul and New York auto shows.

Note: We adjusted the exposure of the teaser
image to reveal more details.

Volkswagen announces three-row Tiguan production in Mexico starting late 2016

Volkswagen announces three-row Tiguan production in Mexico starting late 2016

2016 Volkswagen Tiguan mule spy photo / SB-Medien

On sale in 2017

Volkswagen has disclosed plans to produce in Mexico a
three-row version of the second
generation Tiguan.

It seems rumors about a seven-seater
Tiguan were true as Volkswagen de Mexico has announced the car will enter
production towards the end of 2016 at the factory in Puebla. To get ready for
the roomier Tiguan assembly, Volkswagen will invest $1 billion in the expansion
and modernization of the production facilities where they also put together the
seventh generation Golf.

The seven-seater Volkswagen Tiguan will be built by about 2,000 employees at a
production rate of 500 units per day and will be commercialized starting 2017 in North and
South America, as well as in other regions of the world, with the exception of
EU countries and China. Tiguan production will require installing new lines at the Puebla
factory where they will also establish a new body shop and other buildings which
will add 90,000 square meters to Volkswagen de Mexico's Puebla facilities.

According to the latest rumors, the Euro-spec Tiguan will be
unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show and will have just about the
same dimensions as the outgoing model. Needless to say, the seven-seater will
adopt a longer wheelbase to make room for the third row of seats.

Volkswagen Australia managing director John White has
previously revealed the new MQB-based Tiguan will be "totally redesigned" and it will
look "
phenomenal." Interestingly, there are also talks about a sporty-looking five-seater version
which if produced will likely be influenced by the
Cross
Coupe GTE concept
.

Getting a soft top

A fully camouflaged Mercedes-Benz
C-Class Cabriolet prototype has been caught on camera by our spy
photographers.

The defunct CLK is about to get a spiritual successor in the
form of a C-Class Cabriolet equipped with a multi-layered soft top and according
to several reports it will be cheaper than the SLK (soon to be SLC).
The prototype spotted here is still dressed in a heavy amount of disguise but
it's not that hard how to imagine how the car will look like after looking at
the sedan.

Mercedes-Benz provided a sneak preview of the interior cabin
through a mockup
which was displayed last summer in Stuttgart at the firm's museum.
Unsurprisingly, the cabin was largely carried over from the sedan and wagon
C-Class but with different power tilt & slide seats and additional buttons
for the roof. The production car will most likely get the AIRSCARF (neck-level
heating) and AIRCAP (air deflector) systems as seen on other open-top
Mercedes models.

Chances are the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet will be
introduced in 2016, following the release of the
C-Class
Coupe
set for later this year. Both cars will most likely get C63 AMG versions
equipped with a twin-turbo V8 4.0-liter engine delivering 476 HP & 650 Nm
and 510 HP & 700 Nm in S specification.

McLaren Sport Series will be launched with C & S variants

McLaren Sport Series will be launched with C & S variants

McLaren Sports Series screenshot from teaser video

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt has revealed some new details about the upcoming Sport Series.

In an interview with Car & Driver, Flewitt confirmed their entry-level model line will carry the familiar "power-output-then-letter pattern" of models such as the 675LT which was recently unveiled in Geneva.

The executive went on to say the Sport Series will be launched with two different coupe variants that both start with the number "5."  He declined to go into specifics but confirmed there will be an entry-level C variant and a higher performance S variant.  Speaking of the latter, Flewitt said the S variant is "almost our ideal specification" as it has "more power, more focus and so on."

Flewitt went on to say the company will eventually offer a Long Tail variant and confirmed the model will be priced against either the Porsche 911 Turbo or Turbo S - depending on the market.

As a refresher, the McLaren Sport Series will debut at the New York Auto Show and feature a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and a detuned version on the company's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine which is connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Lotus CEO Admits SUV Possibility

With Dany Bahar no longer at the helm of troubled sports car specialist Lotus, you would think that the brand's foray into making more mainstream vehicles would have ended. Unfortunately, the situation may be far from it, if Group Lotus's new chief Jean-Marc Gales is to be believed. Speaking with Reuters at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, Gales admitted that Lotus may need to also jump on the crossover/SUV bandwagon if it plans to survive the upcoming years.

While the news is likely upsetting, to say the least, to die-hard Lotus fans, Gales promises that Lotus will not just do another plain crossover but "reinvent the category," quickly explaining himself: "We'd do an SUV that is very light, very fast on the track and has outstanding handling," he told the news agency. "I'm a bit torn between an SUV and a four-door sports car - but in the end I can see that the SUV has the bigger market."

On the plus side, despite what the quote may suggest, Jean-Marc Gales is actually an old-school car guy who seems to understand the Lotus philosophy better than his predecessor. "We had an electronically opening glove box, which in a sports car is worse than useless. I don't know who put that in, but I took it out." he said at Geneva. In my book, this is a perfect example of his Colin Chapman-like mindset, so hopefully the crossover Lotus will adhere to the "simplify, then add lightness" principle as well, as that would indeed revolutionize the niche.

Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster

Lamborghini launched the SuperVeloce specification all the way back in the 1960s, first appearing on the Miura, the nameplate that basically introduced the world to the mid-engine supercar. Dropped when the Miura was discontinued, the SV name returned nearly 30 years later when Lambo showcased the Diablo SV at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show. Since then, every range-topping Lambo has gotten an SV version. There was a Murcielago SV, and the Aventador SuperVeloce was presented at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

But while the SV badge has graced four different supercars as of 2015, not all of then have been offered as roadsters. The Miura was built as a coupe only (except for a one-off roadster), while the only drop-top version of the Diablo was based on the less powerful VT. The Murcielago was the first SV to lose its roof and it seems the Aventador is ready to follow suit, as a supercar sporting the body kit of the recently unveiled SV was spotted stretching its wheels with a removable top.

Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Berlinetta Lusso leaks out early

Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Berlinetta Lusso leaks out early

Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Berlinetta Lusso

Based on the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta

The first pictures of the Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Berlinetta Lusso have surfaced online, ahead of its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Based on the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Berlinetta Lusso adopts a curvaceous new body with a retro appearance.  There's no word on specifics but it appears that virtually every body panel has been replaced.

The interior largely carries over but we can see two-tone leather upholstery, silver trim and Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera sill plates.

There no word on performance specification but the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta has a 6.2-liter V12 engine that develops 740 PS (544 kW) and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque.  It is connected to a dual-clutch transmission which enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.1 seconds before hitting a top speed in excess of 340 km/h (211 mph).

Rolls-Royce crossover will be “nearly as long” as the Phantom

 Rolls-Royce crossover will be

Rolls-Royce Phantom Metropolitan Collection

New details are starting to emerge about Rolls-Royce's upcoming crossover.

In an interview with Autocar, Rolls-Royce Design Director Giles Taylor revealed the model will be "nearly as long" as the Phantom and have a "very proud, very modern" front fascia.

Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten M ller- tv s added the crossover will be a "genuine Rolls-Royce from the ground up" thanks to its new aluminum architecture.  He went on to say this is important as it "shows that our car isn't simply going to be a differently styled [BMW] X7."

While the company has been tight-lipped about the model, the magazine is reporting the crossover will be launched in 2017 and feature an upgraded version of the Phantom's 6.75-liter V12 engine.  There's no word on specifications but the engine currently produces 453 bhp (460 PS / 338 kW) and 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) of torque.

The publication is also reporting the model will carry a base price of approximately 250,000 - 280,000 ($386,117 - $432,488).

Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf launched in Europe and South Africa

Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf

Production limited to 200 units

Aston Martin has announced plans to sell the exclusive Lagonda
Taraf in select European markets and South Africa.

Described as being "the finest of the fast cars", Aston
Martin's Lagonda Taraf went on sale towards the end of last year in the Middle
East and now the company has announced plans to expand availability in Continental Europe, United Kingdom and
South Africa so it has been engineered in both left- and right-hand drive.

Total production will remain capped at 200 cars and all of
them are powered by a 6.0-liter V12 engine outputting 550 bhp (410 kW) allowing
the Lagonda Taraf hit a top speed of 175 mph (281 km/h). The super sedan is hand-built through Aston Martin's Q personalization division and all vehicles benefit from a carbon
fiber body and a very luxurious cabin.

Check out the attached press release to find out all the
countries where Aston Martin will sell the Lagonda Taraf.

Mercedes-Benz GLS (GL facelift) spied testing in Germany

Mercedes-Benz GLS (GL facelift) spied testing in Germany

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS spy photo / S. Baldauf / SB-Medien

Launching later this year

The Mercedes-Benz
GLS has been spied undergoing testing at home in Germany ahead of this year's
launch.

Daimler's largest SUV is one of the many models affected by
the new
nomenclature and as a consequence the "GL" name will be dropped in favor of "GLS" to better show the model's similarity in size with the S-Class. Despite
getting a new name, the GLS will only be a facelift of the current generation
so the styling tweaks will be limited.

Expect revised headlights and taillights, updated grille
along with slightly modified bumpers while on the inside there should also be some
changes to spice up the cabin and will likely have a lot in common with the GLE
Coupe.

A more luxurious Maybach
version could join the range with a higher specification interior cabin
where the rear passengers will likely be pampered with individual seats
offering lots of adjustment options. In addition, a Mercedes-Maybach GLS would
likely get a slightly longer wheelbase and a few subtle exterior touches like
the Maybach-specific wheels, grille and the compulsory badging.

Mercedes-Benz has already confirmed
the GL facelift / GLS will be out this year so chances are it will premiere in
September at the Frankfurt Motor Show before going on sale towards the end of
the year as a 2016MY.

Koenigsegg Regera spied and teased [video]

Koenigsegg Regera spied and teased [video]

Koenigsegg Regera spy photo / TheSuperCarKids

Will have 1,341 bhp

Koenigsegg has released a short teaser clip of their
upcoming

Regera

,
confirming the megacar will adopt a plug-in hybrid system.

The video shows an electrically-operated cap making
extensive use of carbon fiber while the attached spy shots reveal a
substantially different design compared to recent Koenigsegg models. Noticeable
are the vented rear fenders and a massive diffuser hosting a large central oval
exhaust while the slender LED taillights have an interesting shape.

Koenigsegg says the Regera will be a "megacar" just like the

One:1

which means it will have a maximum power output of 1,341 bhp (986 kW). However,
while the One:1 is powered exclusively by a twin-turbo V8 5.0-liter engine, the
Regera is

believed

to adopt a 690 bhp (515 kW) electric motor so the conventional engine will
generate less power than the V8 inside the One:1.

The latest gossip refers to the Regera as being the fastest
accelerating car in the world. We will find out if this is true on Tuesday when
Koenigsegg will unveil the car in Geneva.

Smart ForTwo Cabrio edition MOSCOT unveiled, based on the old model

Smart ForTwo Cabrio edition MOSCOT unveiled, based on the old model

Smart ForTwo Cabrio edition MOSCOT

Limited to 100 units

Smart has teamed up with eyewear maker MOSCOT for a special
edition of the outgoing ForTwo Cabrio.

Limited to 100 cars, the special edition was designed to
celebrate MOSCOT's 100th anniversary and also to mark the "impending
finale" of the current ForTwo Cabrio. All cars are getting deep glossy black
body panels combined with a matte yellow tridion safety cell featuring a matte
accent stripe. It rides on BRABUS Monoblock VII alloys painted in glossy black
and enhanced with a yellow ring on the rim flange.

Also noticeable are the titanium-colored headlights, a
MOSCOT label in the mirror triangles while the front fascia hosts a BRABUS
spoiler lip. The cabin gets a similar black & yellow theme, with black leather
on the seats, door paneling, instrument cluster, knee pad and door pockets
while yellow leather inserts have been applied on the seat sides as well as on
the knee pad.

There's also contrasting top stitching on the three-spoke
leather-wrapped steering wheel while yellow rings have been applied onto the
ancillary dashboard instruments and on the shift lever knob. As a final touch,
Smart has installed unique "edition MOSCOT" floor mats featuring nubuck leather
trim.

Based on the Brabus version, the Smart ForTwo Cabrio edition
MOSCOT benefits from a 10mm lowered sports suspension and is powered
exclusively by a three-cylinder 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 102 HP (75 kW)
sent to the wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Already available on order, this (possibly) last special
edition of the ForTwo Cabrio is priced in Germany from 29,524, with deliveries
scheduled to kick off early summer.

Magna Steyr MILA Plus Hybrid Concept

Based in Graz, Austria, Magna Steyr is an automobile manufacturer primarily known for assembling vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the Mini Countryman/Paceman, the first-generation BMW X3, the Aston Martin Rapide and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, among many others. The Austrians also developed Mercedes' 4MATIC AWD system and Opel's TwinTop convertible roof assembly for the Astra. But despite these many achievements and its ability to develop and assemble mainstream vehicles, Magna Steyr has yet to manufacture a production car of its own. Instead, the Austrians created a number of concepts under the Magna Innovation Lightweight Auto (MILA) brand.

Now, with the 2015 Geneva Motor Show right around the corner, Magna Steyr has readied yet another concept, this time a hybrid, lightweight sports car. Named the MILA Plus Hybrid, the study seems to follow in the footsteps of the BMW i8 by combining sports car-like performance and strong fuel economy. Although the full specs are still being kept under wraps as of February 2015, and Magna Steyr has yet to mention whether the MILA Plus is slated to become a production car, the concept is worth looking into with the current sports-car market moving closer to hybridization.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe Al-Adiyat Collection

Introduced at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, the Phantom Coupe is currently in its second generation, with Rolls having unveiled the Series II for the 2013 model year. The update included a slightly revised exterior, enhanced cabin features, and improved fuel economy. Naturally, the refresh also slapped a new sticker to its windshield, making it one of the few half-million-dollar cars on the market.

But despite being one of the most opulent rigs and wearing a badge that speaks for itself, the standard Phantom Coupe isn't enough to satisfy some wealthy businessmen and car collectors. Thus Rolls-Royce created Bespoke, a customizing division specializing in creating one-off or limited-edition iterations of just about any model available in the brand's lineup. The latest unique model to come from Bespoke is the Phantom Coupe Al-Adiyat, which is inspired by "the noise made by a powerful horse when its hooves strike stone."

The Al-Adiyat joins a long list of special-edition Rolls-Royce models, including the Ghost Mysore Collection, Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupe, Phantom Drophead Coupe Nighthawk, and the Phantom Metropolitan Collection, all crafted to custom specifications.

BMW M4 GTS Spied

BMW only reserves the GTS nameplate for the hardened, lightened versions of their road going M cars. The last car to wear the GTS badge was the E92 M3 GTS, which in its pursuit of sportiness applied the tried and true formula of removing weight and adding power to make it one of the finest M3s ever to come out of a BMW factory. Now we get an almost undisguised glimpse of the new F80 M3/M4 GTS via spy shots that hit the web recently.

The spy shots reveal the car with minimal camouflage that hide a revised bumper and is also plastered on the new rear spoiler. This prototype wears decals that indicate it to be a safety car, however all the aerodynamic and visual modifications tell us that it is definitely something more than just a safety car. The fixed, big rear spoiler looks similar to the one found on the last M3 GTS. Moreover, the front bumper looks to have been revised with larger air intakes and a new splitter. Reports of other test mules indicate that the car will also have new lightweight recaro seats and new lightweight alloy wheels to remove weight. To remove even more weight, we expect BMW to make use of materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum in the construction of the car.

As the current M3/M4 make produce 431 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, expect the GTS versions to make 450-500 horsepower via added boost from it's twin-turbocharged 3.0L straight six engine. The GTS will most likely be a limited production run with a hefty premium over the standard M3/M4.

New Rolls-Royce SUV Won’t Be An SUV

In the current global automobile industry, crossovers and SUVs are dominating the markets. Therefore, automakers have been building these high-riding automobiles to meet demand and push their global sales numbers up. It also helps that these vehicles usually have larger profit margins than other segments of the automotive industry, especially when you look at the premium luxury market. A prime example of this is the Porsche Cayenne, and more recently the Porsche Macan, which make up the majority of sales and profit for the Porsche brand. Now ultra-exclusive luxury brand Rolls-Royce has confirmed that it will too build an SUV, just don't let them hear you call it that.

In what has to be the grandest of product announcements, Rolls-Royce has sent a letter to shareholders stating their intentions of building a "high-bodied" vehicle that "can cross any terrain". Without ever mentioning the term SUV, Rolls-Royce has pretty much said that it will build an SUV. When examining the global automotive market, this move should not come as a surprise. Many luxury automakers are already building cross overs or SUVs or have stated their intention to do so. Even Rolls-Royce's historical other half, Bentley, will release their new SUV. The Bentley Bantayga, which Bentley proudly embraces it as an SUV, will be the direct competitor the yet-to-be-named Rolls-Royce "high bodied vehicle".

One interesting detail to note is that in it's letter, Rolls-Royce has pointed out that the new vehicle will have a "unique new motor". If we were to speculate, and we are, the new Rolls will have a V12, possibly turbocharged, as they have V12s in all their other products.

Rolls-Royce's parent company, BMW, already has an SUV platform that they use in their X5 and X6, and seeing as how BMW has managed to underpin the Ghost with a modified 7-series platform, we could see the new Rolls ride on an existing BMW platform. Or not. Rolls-Royce could just come up with a proprietary platform just for this model alone. We will just have to wait and see what they come up with for the 1% that they cater to.

There are many aspects to cars that are enjoyable: exterior and interior design, mechanics, speed, handling, noise, statistics, mobility, sport, etc. These are the exciting attributes that stimulate our passion for the automobile and keeps the culture alive and flourishing among us. On the other hand, there are also negative characteristics and connotations with the automobile: pollution, traffic, the need for fossil fuels (for now), maintenance, high initial cost, destructive image, danger, etc. Nonetheless, we choose to either ignore or tolerate these discouraging properties that come with owning a vehicle by focusing on the positive. Although sometimes, the reality sets in and the whole notion of exciting, quirky, and fun cars becomes discouraging and disappointing.

People who describe themselves as "enthusiasts" of anything (be it cars, bikes, sports, etc), have a passion that stems from somewhere. It could stem from an influential person sharing the same passion, how they were brought up, or even an event that took place in their life. Nevertheless, there was/is something in one's life that nurtured their passion enough for them to call themselves an "enthusiast". After becoming immersed in the various cultures and subcultures of that particular passion, a general consensus and idea of what makes it enjoyable is made. For car enthusiasts in particular, it is fascinating and exciting to know that you are in control of a mechanical object capable of incomprehensible speeds that are impossible for any human to achieve on their own. Not to mention, it's polarizing to see beautifully sculpted cars by Pininfarina, Zagato, Fisker, and Callum (to name a few). Unfortunately, there are many cars that are hard to obtain and are left to be desired.

Unless you are financially sound, it is hard to justify having a second weekend/track car due to cost and storage issues. Therefore, the majority of people only have one daily driver that's expected to be reliable, get reasonable fuel economy, and yet fulfill your needs as car enthusiasts. However, there are many of us that strive to huaving something better. By "better", for lack of a better word, I mean something that is more effective at satisfying our wants and needs. This usually means obtaining a car that is higher up in the "aspirational" ladder. This "aspirational ladder" is different for everyone, as not everyone has the same preference for vehicles. One person might aspire to own an Aventador, while another has their eye on a RS6 Avant. It is human nature to want more than what we already have. It is this lust for something better that can lead to disappointment.

Conversely, an argument can be made that there are people who are, and will continue to be satisfied with the vehicle that they are currently driving. Most likely, there are people who have climbed that ladder, and have finally obtained the car that suits their needs and wants perfectly. As people get older their desires change, new products enter the market, and their financial and personal circumstance changes as well. so it might not be the exact car that they had as a poster on their bedroom wall. But, it is a vehicle that makes them happy in a way that only an auto enthusiast can experience from a car; That "fizzy" feeling that James May describes.

I am not suggesting that because at times it is disappointing that I do not own an Aventador or RS6 Avant that I am beginning to dislike cars. In fact, it is because of these desirable yet rarely obtained cars that I have a love of car culture. All I am saying is that I hope to climb this ladder to where I reach a point of content with the car(s) that I own. But for many in their lifetime that is a difficult, if not impossible, state of mind to attain.
