BMW 1-Series M sedan in the works - report

2013 BMW M135i

Standard model could be launched in 2015

We're already heard reports that BMW is developing a 1-Series sedan to battle the Mercedes CLA and now comes word that a 1-Series M sedan is in the works to fend off the CLA 45 AMG.

Designed to appeal to buyers in China and the United States, the model could be based on either the rear-wheel drive platform that underpins the 1-Series or the front-wheel drive UKL platform that will debut on the 1-Series GT. The company is reportedly considering both platforms because each has their own advantages - notably cost, packaging and handling.

While there's still a lot of uncertainty about the model, the 1-Series sedan has reportedly been fast-tracked for a 2015 launch. Sources have indicated the model is such a high priority that BMW may have contacted suppliers which could help develop or produce the vehicle.

Engine options will likely carryover from the standard 1-Series, but the M variant is rumored to adopt a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that develops more than 300 HP (221 kW).
