Slated for a late 2014 release

A BMW 2-Series Convertible prototype was spied with the top down on public roads during its final testing phase.

The 1-Series Convertible was phased out back in October last year so BMW has an empty spot to fill and they will likely do it towards the end of the year if we were to believe a recent report. BMW still stubbornly keeps the camouflage on its test prototypes but it's not that hard to imagine how the car will look like after seeing the 2-Series Coupe. Obviously, the main difference between the two will be the convertible's electronically retractable soft top which on this prototype was hiding in the trunk area as the driver was enjoying the spring sun.

Engine lineup will be taken over from its fixed roof sibling but we don't know whether the 326 PS inline-six 3.0-liter motor from the hot M235i will be offered. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive setup and eight-speed automatic transmission will be optionally available while the standard model will make use of a RWD arrangement and a six-speed manual transmission.
