Exec also wants a 1-Series M Coupe successor

The managing director of BMW M Performance Automobiles has revealed the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe will likely debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show.

Speaking to Motor Trend, Friedrich Nitschke said "I think both M3 and M4 will be at the Detroit Show." He declined to elaborate but confirmed the cars will have a carbon fiber roof, an aluminum hood and a carbon fiber trunk lid. We can also expect carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium to be used in the crash zones.

While Audi and Mercedes have embraced all-wheel drive on their performance models, Nitschke said "it’s not necessary on M cars." As he explained, all-wheel drive would spoil the steering and add 80 kg (176 lbs) to the new M3. Nitschke went on to say the cars will have excellent traction - thanks to a torque vectoring differential and a new traction management system - so all-wheel drive simply isn't worth the trade offs.

Nitschke also confirmed he wants a 1-Series M Coupe successor but no decision has been made as of yet. The MD also said he drove the Mercedes A45 AMG on the Nürburgring and found that it understeers and has a laggy engine.
