British media is reporting Opel/Vauxhall will transform the next generation Zafira and Meriva into crossovers.

Renault did a very good job at converting the new Espace into more of a crossover and it seems Opel and Vauxhall are taking the same route with their new Zafira and Meriva. Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann already announced back in August that customers now want "the SUV look" which is why the Zafira and Meriva will "go into this direction" and now Auto Express says both of them will indeed get a high-riding crossover look for what is believed to be a late 2016 launch.

Both cars will be jointly developed with PSA Peugeot Citroën who will be getting their own two versions but all four of them will feature differentiated styling. Engine lineup is expected to include economical turbocharged three- and four-cylinder motors as part of the downsizing trend.

According to the same report, Opel and Vauxhall are also working on a high-end SUV with styling cues borrowed from the stunning Monza concept but it's not known at this point whether the French will be getting their own versions. Chances are the vehicle will be out after the overhauled Zafira and Meriva so look for a debut sometime in 2017 or 2018.
