As timeless as always
Porsche has announced plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 911 with a variety of events throughout the year.
The celebration will kick off at the Retro Classics automobile show in Stuttgart, which runs from March 7th through the 10th. During this time, the Porsche Museum will have four special exhibits including an early-model 911 Turbo Coupe, 1981 911 Cabriolet concept, a 1997 911 GT1 and a Type 754 T7 which was a "milestone on the way to the 911 design."
Later in the year, the Porsche Museum will hold a "50 years of the Porsche 911" exhibition. It runs from June 4th to September 29th and will chronicle the development of the legendary sports car.
The company will also send a vintage 1967 Porsche 911 on a world tour. Over the course of the year, it will be displayed at various events across the globe including the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Originally unveiled as the 901 at the 1963 IAA International Automotive Show, the model would eventually be renamed the 911 to settle a dispute with Peugeot. It was launched in 1964 with an air-cooled, six-cylinder boxer engine that developed 128 HP (94 kW) which enabled the model to hit a top speed of 131 mph (211 km/h).
Since then, Porsche has gone to build over 820,000 911s which they claim makes it the "most successful sports car in the world."
