With so many Mercedes-Benz AMG models floating around the market at the moment, it would have been easy to forget that the German giant doesn't have a direct competitor to the Audi RS3 hatch or the BMW M135i. That's where the new A45 AMG is said to step in.

Pinned to be the most affordable AMG on sale, the A45 AMG aims to not only compete with the aforementioned BMW and Audi models, but to completely annihilate them with its performance capabilities. In fact, Mercedes recently boasted that it'll provide class-leading cornering speeds.

Implementing a highly-tuned 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine used in the recently updated A-class, the A45 AMG is said to pump out an impressive 330 horsepower while AMG stated "maximum torque [will be] significantly above 295 pound-feet," in other words, around 310 to 350 pound-feet of torque.

With figures like these, it's little surprise that the four-cylinder engine being prepped for this vehicle will be the most powerful ever produced by the brand, leading Tobias Moers, head of development at AMG to state "Our goal right from the start was to match the output of the larger turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine used by the RS3."

With these figures, the A45 AMG will definitely achieve that objective. The A45 AMG has actually been in development for the better part of two years, so Mercedes-Benz and AMG and have definitely taken some time before unveiling the car. With all the technology said to be packed into this little package, it's little wonder why.

In addition to the incredible engine, AMG will fit a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission into the car mated to an advanced four-wheel drive system, which means, unfortunately, burnouts in this AMG won't be possible. Nevertheless, Mercedes will apply typical AMG styling to the car, with an extensive body kit expected. Upgrades to the interior will also be conducted.

UPDATE 2/12/2013: The AMG version of the new generation A-Class will make its world debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but the car couldn't remain a secret until then. The first images of the car have already surfaced on the internet, meaning the official details are just around the corner. Check out the gallery to see the images.
