Features electrically-operated folding canvas top

An undisguised prototype of the 2016
Smart ForTwo Cabrio has been spotted undergoing final testing in Stuttgart.

As expected, it looks virtually the same as its fixed roof
sibling with the exception of the electrically-operated folding canvas top carried
over from its predecessor, just like the manually removable side bars.

Daimler-owned Smart has already announced the ForTwo Cabrio
will be out later this year with the same naturally aspirated
1.0-liter engine developing 60 HP (45 kW) and 71 HP (52 kW) along with a beefier
0.9-liter turbo rated at 90 HP (66 kW). A five-speed manual transmission will
be standard, but at an additional cost you will be able to order an optional
dual-clutch six-speed gearbox.

A Brabus-prepared
version of the ForTwo is in the works and chances are it will also be
available as a Cabrio with an uprated version of the 0.9-liter turbo likely
pushing out around 120 HP (88 kW).

Smart will bring the US-spec
2016 ForTwo
to this week's New York Auto Show and they could decide to unveil
the Cabrio as well. If that won't happen, a September debut at the Frankfurt
Motor Show is very probable.
