2011 LINCOLN MKZ Hybrid
Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

Lincoln introduced its first hybrid - the new 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid - a premium midsize car poised to be the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in America. Ford Motor Company - America's largest domestic hybrid seller - is further broadening its aggressive electrification plan and second generation of hybrid technology with the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The vehicle was revealed at the 2010 New York International Auto Show.

"Lincoln's hallmarks are design, technology and comfort. Now, Lincoln also delivers the best fuel efficiency of any luxury sedan in America," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas.

Lincoln's first-ever hybrid is expected to deliver at least 41 miles per gallon in the city when it goes on sale this fall.

The new premium midsize sedan hybrid joins Ford Motor Company's growing lineup of hybrids, including the Ford Fusion Hybrid - 2010 North American Car of the Year and America's most fuel-efficient sedan - plus the Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury Milan and Mariner Hybrids.

Introduction of the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also complements Ford's aggressive global electrification plan. Ford is introducing five new electrified vehicles by 2013. They include the Transit Connect Electric in late 2010, the Focus Electric in 2011, a next-generation hybrid electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in 2012, followed by another next-generation hybrid electric vehicle in 2013.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid's projected fuel economy tops its nearest competitor - the 2010 Lexus HS 250h - by 6 mpg. It also trumps the Lexus with room for one more passenger and more standard luxury and segment-exclusive safety features.

"Today's luxury customers do not want to make sacrifices. Lincoln has found a way to deliver a luxury sedan with the comforts they expect, the technology they want and the environmental responsibility society demands," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president, Global Product Development.

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid uses Ford's second-generation hybrid technology - the 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle I-4 hybrid engine, named one of Ward's 2010 "10 Best Engines."

The system combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver optimal performance and fuel economy.

Industry-leading fuel economy comes without sacrificing power. The combined gasoline engine and electric motor provide 191 net horsepower. Plus, the pure electric mode on the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid extends to 47 mph - compared with the Lexus HS 250h battery-only mode, which reaches just 25 mph.

More standard luxury

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid comes standard with features and technologies that are either not offered on the Lexus HS 250h or are available only at an extra cost. They include:

SmartGauge with EcoGuide - Ford's highly successful interactive technology provides real-time information to help drivers maximize fuel efficiency, and coaches drivers on how to optimize hybrid performance. Lincoln takes SmartGauge to the next level of engagement by giving drivers enhanced positive feedback on long-term fuel efficiency and driving performance through the "growth" of virtual small flowers on the system's right-most screen. Lincoln's white flowers, inspired by apple blossoms, remain permanently unless long-term fuel economy is reset.

Lincoln SYNC - The Lincoln-exclusive voice-activated communications and entertainment system provides an omnipresent link to contacts and information. In addition to Bluetooth phone, audible text and MP3 player capabilities, Lincoln customers also can access Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist .

10-Way Power Passenger Seat - This seat is designed to accommodate a diverse group of passengers. Memory functions enable passengers to fine-tune and recall their positions.

Power Driver Memory Seat Settings - The driver seat memory feature helps ensure personal seating preferences anytime, with the touch of a button.

Heated and Cooled Front Seats - This uniquely engineered system delivers exceptional heating and cooling comfort.

Genuine Wood Trim - In addition to their exquisite appearance, the Swirl Walnut and Olive Ash wood trims offered in the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid are eco-friendly as well. The veneers come from well-managed forests, as defined by strict environmental, social and economic standards, and from other rigorously controlled sources.

Reverse Sensing System - This system senses what drivers might not see behind them and relays an audible alert if objects are near, which increases in frequency the closer a driver gets.

Keyless Entry Keypad - This Lincoln-exclusive feature provides secure entry at a driver's fingertips. A personal combination holds a memory for driver preferences. So if an owner is out for a run and doesn't want to take the keys along, the vehicle can be opened with the touch of a few buttons.

Easy Fuel Capless Fuel-Filler - This Lincoln-exclusive feature uses an integrated spring-loaded flapper door to eliminate the need for a fuel tank screw cap. That means no more fumbling to remove and tighten the cap and less fuel odor on a driver's hands at the pump.

Personal Safety System - A Lincoln-exclusive suite of seven protection technologies works together as a system to help protect vehicle occupants. The system includes dual-stage front air bags and an occupant classification system to sense whether the passenger seat is occupied. It tailors - or suppresses - air bag deployment to help provide an appropriate level of protection. It also features the Ford Belt-Minder system to remind front-seat occupants to buckle up.

MyKey - This Lincoln-exclusive feature allows parents to program a key to limit speed and audio volume to encourage teens to drive safer and improve fuel efficiency. It also encourages seat belt usage, provides earlier low-fuel warnings, and can be programmed to sound chimes at 45, 55 and 65 mph.

Integrated Spotter Mirrors - The traditional side-view mirrors are designed with a secondary convex spotter mirror in the top outer corner, which provides a view of the driver's blind spot. When traffic enters the driver's blind spot on either side of the vehicle, it is visible in the secondary convex mirror, alerting the driver of obstacles.

Acoustic Laminated Windshield - This windshield features a layer of sound-absorbent vinyl sandwiched between two sheets of glass, which enhances interior quietness.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also includes standard Bridge of Weir leather seats. The world-renowned luxury leather from Scotland is unembossed, allowing the natural beauty and character of the grain to shine through. The leather is milled for up to 12 hours to ensure a soft hand, and Bridge of Weir uses a chromium-free tanning process, which makes it easier to recycle.

PLYMOUTH Car Models

Plymouth 1971
Plymouth Hemi Barracuda

As 1970 rolled around, another redesign was in order for the Barracuda. The performance version was badged and advertised as the 'Cuda. This year's new design looked quite a bit different from the previous models. One of the reasons was that it was now built on a new, slightly shorter, wider, and sportier version of Chrysler's existing B platform, the E-body. This new generation eliminated the fastback, but kept the two-door coupe and convertible versions. It also had a Dodge near-twin known as the Challenger; however, not one body panel interchanged between the two cars and the Challenger had a slightly longer wheelbase. Both were aggressively and cleanly styled, although they were clearly influenced by the first-generation Chevrolet Camaro. After the switch to the E platform, which featured a larger engine bay than the previous A-body, Chrysler's famous 426 in (7.0 L) Hemi would now be available from the factory in the Barracuda. The HemiCuda had about a factory rating of 6 MPG, and was sold without warranty.

Race car drivers Swede Savage and Dan Gurney drove identical factory-sponsored Barracudas in the 1970 Trans-Am Series, although with no success. With the 440-6 and 426 Hemi, the performance from these production Barracudas ended up being legendary. The 1/4 mile times for these were 13.7 s @ 103 mph and 13.4 s @ 108 mph - both among the fastest times of the day. These engines were very easy to slightly modify and drop into the 12s, but either way - stock or modified - one could virtually have a 5-passenger race car. Barracudas also came with decal sets, hood modifications, and some unusual colors ("Go Mango", "Plum Crazy", and "Panther Pink").

The Barracuda was changed slightly for 1971, with a new grille and taillights. This would be the only year that the Barracuda would have four headlights, and also the only year of the optional fender "gills". The 1971 Barracuda engine options would remain the same as that of the 1970 model, except for the fact that a 4-barrel carbureted 440 engine was not available; all 440-powered Barracudas had a six-barrel carburetor setup instead. The 426 Hemi option would remain, and the Hemi-powered 1971 Barracuda convertible is now considered one of the rarest and most desirable collectible automobiles.

In 1970 and 1971, two options were available that are now highly sought-after by collectors. They are the shaker hood and the Spicer Dana 60 rearend. The shaker hood was available on 340ci Six-Pack, 383ci, 440ci and Six-Pack, and 426ci Hemi-equipped 'Cudas. The heavy Dana 60, with a 9 3/4 inch ring gear and considered nearly indestructible, was standard on manual transmission 440 Six-Pack and 426 Hemi equipped 'Cudas, and was optional on those with the automatic transmission.

After another grille and taillight redesign in 1972, the Barracuda would keep its overall look the same through 1974, with dual headlights and four circular taillights. But like other pony cars of the time, these years showed a major decrease in the Barracuda's power due to stricter emission laws. The largest available engine in 1972 was the 340 4bbl; a 360 was available in 1974. New safety regulations would also force the vehicle to have large front and rear bumper guards in 1973 and 1974. The Barracuda hung on through 1974, after which it was discontinued in the midst of the 1973 oil crisis. Production ended ten years (to the day) after it had begun. Although today they are sought-after collector cars, the third generation was a marketplace failure and never successfully competed with rival offerings from Ford and General Motors. The rarity of specific models and combinations today is primarily the result of low original-buyer interest and production..

Engines with lower fuel consumption and emissions
The engines of the new generation work more efficiently than ever before.
The 40 kW cdi turbodiesel is the CO2 champion with emissions of just 86 g/km. The optimised petrol engines also set new records with regard to CO2 emissions. Thanks to detailed work on the engine control unit and exhaust system both the 45 kW mhd and the 52 kW mhd consume 4.2 litres of petrol per 100 km (combined figure) - corresponding to CO2 emissions of 97 g/km (combined figure). The 62 kW version consumes 4.9 litres of fuel over 100 km (corresponding to CO2 emissions of 114 g/km). The power output of the BRABUS version has been increased from 72 kW to 75 kW. Despite this, at 119 g CO2 per 100 kilometres (combined figure) even the more powerful engine remains below the 120 gram threshold.
Limited special model "smart fortwo edition lightshine"The smart brand is celebrating the introduction of the new generation fortwo with a limited welcome model boasting high quality equipment which continues the series of exciting special models. The smart fortwo edition lightshine is based on the passion equipment line which means that standard features include air conditioning, softouch and the bodypanel plus package. It is available in the new exterior colours matt light green or light blue metallic as a coup and cabrio with a 52 kW mhd petrol engine, a 62 kW petrol engine or a 40kW cdi engine.
The special model boasts all the standard modifications implemented in the smart model refinement package. These include a new fabric-covered instrument panel with a new dial, new upholstery colours in design beige or design black, the fuel filler cap finished in the body colour and net pockets on the side bolsters between the seats.
Additional highlights of the special model are equipment features that are otherwise only available as options. For example, the high performance audio system navigation/multimedia including navigation and Bluetooth hands-free system, striking LED daytime driving lights and dashboard instruments.
And finally, equipment exclusive to the smart fortwo edition lightshine includes headlamp surrounds finished in the body colour, silver-grey painted 3-double-spoke 15" alloy wheels and the "edition" logo in the mirror triangle. Contrast components in matt chrome and velour floor mats with the "edition" logo further upgrade the interior.
The additional charge for the special model smart fortwo edition lightshine on top of the basic version is 2,065 with a metallic finish and 2,220 with the new matt light green finish (German list price incl. 19% VAT).
Trendsetter for environmentally friendly urban mobilityAs a trendsetter the smart fortwo has been redefining individual urban mobility for more than ten years now. It combines responsibility to the environment and high ecological standards with joie de vivre and a high fun factor. With its compact dimensions the two-seater takes up an unrivalled amount of road and parking space. It boasts state-of-the-art functionality and uses future-oriented, environmentally friendly technologies to bring its occupants to their destination comfortably and safely.
Many successes confirm that smart is on the right track with its trend-setting "smart approach" - for example with regard to design: the smart fortwo received the coveted Red dot award for outstanding design and found a place in the New York Museum of Modern Art even before it took to the streets of the USA in 2008. Or with regard to ecology: emitting just 86 grams of CO2 per kilometre, the smart cdi is the CO2 champion and smart boasts the lowest fleet consumption. Furthermore, smart is a pioneer in the sector of electric vehicles and is redefining zero-emission urban mobility. Or innovative mobility: within the framework of the "car2go" project in Ulm and now also in the Texan capital of Austin, smart fortwos can be spontaneously rented by anyone around the clock for a small fee. This new mobility concept that won the koGlobe environmental award is extremely successful and makes driving in the city as easy as using a mobile phone. Or attitude to life: with the "smart urban stages" smart is creating temporary exhibition platforms in various cities for future-oriented projects that relate to ideas for the future of urban life.
Furthermore, exceptional economy remains a defining feature of the smart fortwo. According to calculations by the ADAC, the largest German automobile club, even the first generation of the charming two-seater was the most economical car on the German market. The verdict was that no other car is cheaper to run in Germany. The car magazine "Auto, Motor und Sport" also put the trendy two-seater at the top of its table of cost-efficient cars.
More than 1.2 million smart fortwos have been delivered to customers since the first model was launched in 1998. Today, customers in 43 countries on five continents are able to enjoy the popular car. In the course of 2010 the smart fortwo will be launched in Argentina and Indonesia - bringing the number of countries to 45.

SMART insurance information | 2011 forspeed Concept

2011 SMART forspeed Concept
SMART car pictures download - Car insurance information, specifications, review -

2011 SMART forspeed Concept
Smart is presenting an unconventional study at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show: the smart forspeed Concept combines contemporary urban mobility with the fun factor typical of smart. The two-seater has no roof or side windows and it features a low wind deflector instead of a windscreen in the style of a classic propeller aircraft. The result is an incomparable fresh air driving experience. The responsive electric drive that has been further developed and features a boost function also guarantees driving pleasure. A look forward at the next generation is particularly exciting as the era of electric mobility has already started at smart.

No roof, minimal windows and a responsive and zero-emission electric drive at the rear: the smart forspeed Concept combines responsibility and emotional appeal in a new and pleasurable way. Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart says "The smart forspeed is a completely new take on how much fun it is to drive electric: it boasts a superb design with a powerful drive system and, needless to say, locally emission-free. And if you put the smart forspeed next to our ebike, escooter and smart fortwo electric drive you'll see that smart has realised all kinds of variations of electric driving - demonstrating that smart is not just a practical city car, but a great idea." The smart forspeed boasts an extremely innovative and self-assured design. Prof. Dr. h. c. Gorden Wagener, Head of Design says "The cult brand smart has always taken an unconventional approach with bold design. The forspeed now carries purist sportiness to extremes and in terms of form it is also a pioneer for a new paradigm of mobility."

Powerful and environmentally friendly electric drive with an extra boost
smart is a pioneer in modern electric mobility. The second generation smart fortwo electric drive has been delivered to customers since the end of 2009. It is been proving its suitability for everyday use in 18 countries including Germany, Italy, Spain, England, France, Switzerland, the USA, Canada and further countries in Asia. Due to the high demand production figures have been increased to 1500 vehicles. Thanks to this experience smart has already collected extensive customer feedback that has been integrated in the development of the smart forspeed's electric drive. With its improved performance and charge management the concept vehicle offers a look at the performance potential of future generations of the electric smart.

For example, the smart forspeed Concept accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h in just 5.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 120 km/h. A 30 kW magneto-electric motor is installed at the rear of the smart forspeed and the vehicle concept provides an immediate powerful response from stationary. Pressing a button in the centre console activates a boost function which provides an extra 5 kW of power for a short time and is ideal for overtaking manoeuvres on urban highways, for example. The smart forspeed is powered by a lithium-ion battery that delivers 16.5 kWh of electrical energy. It is simple to charge at any conventional 220 Volt socket. The charging device is located in the third brake light behind the smart logo and features a simple push/push opening mechanism. A fully charged battery is sufficient for 135 kilometres of driving fun (NEDC). Quick charging from 0 to 80 percent takes just 45 minutes.

The forspeed developers have integrated a further clever way of charging in the wind deflector: photovoltaic cells feed solar power to the on-board electrical system. As with the smart escooter this lengthens the battery life of the smartphone, for example.

Unconventional exterior
With its high-gloss white metallic paintwork the smart forspeed Concept also builds a bridge to the two-wheel escooter and ebike studies that were presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

The front and rear lamps have a very striking design. The outer rings are illuminated by a large number of rod-shaped LEDs whilst the centre of the lamps is white. The indicators seem to push outwards like arrows - like drops on the cockpit window of an aeroplane as it takes off. In the front and rear bumpers numerous holes with a honeycomb structure serve as air inlets and create an interesting progressive pattern. At the same time this pattern gives the forspeed a particularly wide appearance and a powerful road stance. The smart forspeed is fitted with front tyres in size 205/35 R 18 to match its dynamic look. On the driven rear axle the tyres measure 235/30 R 18 for full grip.

Purist and sporty interior
The exterior and interior of the smart forspeed are designed as a formal unit. This is manifested in numerous details: the tridion safety cell flows from the outside behind the roll-over bars towards the front to the cockpit and forms the centre tunnel as a load-bearing part. The outer and inner door sections connect seamlessly to form a single component, just like the floor and side walls. The leather seats also have a one-shell design and are a modern interpretation of purist sportiness.

The air inlet in the wind deflector ends in the central outlet in the centre console and can provide even more fresh air for the interior when needed.

The high-gloss white of the exterior paintwork also dominates in the interior. It is accentuated by green elements such as the sporty four-point seat belts for driver and passenger or the large horizontal shelf under the cockpit that provides stowage space. All the control elements that the driver uses particularly frequently, such as the gear lever, door openers or steering wheel come in natural brown leather. By contrast, load-bearing structural components such as the tridion safety cell or the curved trims on the instrument hoods are in matt platinum silver. Functional elements such as the steering wheel buttons and the shift lever with gate are painted in silver shadow.

The open two-seater has been deliberately designed without an outer door handle - an interior grip is all that is needed to open the door. The control for the electric parking brake is particularly convenient to operate and also has a simple and functional design: the switch on the centre tunnel is reminiscent of the lever used to pull in the landing gear of aircraft.

There is a block with ten LEDs in the middle of the instrument panel. When the forspeed is started the LEDs shine through the translucent paint and show the battery charge status of the electric smart. When switched off noting is seen of the charge indicator except its outline.

Weatherproof thanks to tonneau cover and coating
The whole interior of the smart forspeed can be protected against rain and sun when necessary with a tonneau cover. It is an easy matter to stretch it over the interior and fasten it to the body with the straps. It can be divided in the middle with the help of a zip to free the driver's seat only, for example.

But even without weather protection a downpour will not lead to any serious problems. Water drainage channels in the vehicle floor ensure that water is channelled outside. The seat surfaces also have water drainage channels and all interior equipment has a waterproof coating for fun behind the wheel regardless of the weather.

Smartphone as a communication centre
The purist sportiness of the interior is also reminiscent of classic aircraft construction: the driver and co-pilot sit in front of two separate round turbine-like instrument clusters. Whilst the driver has the speedometer firmly in his field of vision, the passenger is responsible for communication and navigation: this area of the cockpit features a smartphone. It can be swivelled by up to 90 degrees in its holder and towards the driver so that the driver can also take a look at the display of the navigation system.

As in the production models from smart, the smart drive app for the iPhone has all the important features needed whilst driving: phone calls via hands-free system, navigation with a special smart touch and a Car Finder that guides the driver back to the parked car.

Intelligent lightweight design, optimised aerodynamics and state-of-the-art LED technology
With its body made of glass fibre-reinforced plastic the smart forspeed Concept is a real lightweight. The low power-to-weight ratio is conducive to driving pleasure. Moreover, the dynamic two-seater boasts excellent aerodynamics: round, taut forms, a deliberate lack of joints (for example on the single-piece front module), smooth, handleless surfaces on the doors and rear lid and the design of many details based on aircraft construction reduce aerodynamic resistance.

State-of-the-art LED lighting technology contributes to active safety. Furthermore, it is controlled intelligently: daytime running lamps are automatically activated during the daytime. The Citylight system also senses when the forspeed driver turns night into day: photoelectric sensors monitor the brightness and give the command to automatically switch on the low-beam headlamps when necessary.

2011 BMW 3-Series Convertible Auto Insurance Information

2011 BMW 3-Series Convertible
BMW car pictures download - Car insurance information, specifications, review -

2011 BMW 3-Series Convertible
BMW 3-Series Convertible
BMW has announced substantial enhancements to the 2011 BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe, including outstanding style updates for 328i and 335i models and a new engine for 335i models. The 2011 BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe models will go on sale in Spring 2010, and pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
Fundamentally unchanged are each car's essential attributes of rear-wheel drive (xDrive is available on the Coupe), near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, remarkably precise steering, and skillfully engineered suspension...all of which conspire to produce the uniquely satisfying driving experience that is quintessentially BMW.
All-new is the engine for the 335i model. Internally designated the "N55," this turbocharged, all-aluminum engine features essentially the same "short block" and 3.0-liter displacement of its predecessor, but benefits from five additional years worth of development and refinement. The result is an engine that is more responsive, more fuel efficient, and cleaner-running than its outstanding predecessor, but preserves the previous engine's output and soul: 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and a 7,000 rpm redline. The 6-speed manual gearbox - beloved by North American enthusiast drivers - remains standard, and the well-known 6-speed Steptronic automatic is optional, now featuring "pull-style" shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel.
Design. Reflecting the legendary distinction of BMW Coupes and Convertibles
The profile of the BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe is instantly recognizable at first glance. Beyond the basic shape of the car and its classic lines, the new design of the headlights, the enhanced depth and detail of the taillights, the interior, and even the exterior mirrors were specifically created for the Convertible and Coupe. These unique design elements reflect the sporty character of the car. The driver who chooses a two-door vehicle desires a car with dynamic looks as well as driving performance. With this in mind, BMW engineers and designers set out to create a unique, unmistakable blend of design features and most importantly, driving pleasure.
It all begins with proportions. The new, long hood powerfully symbolizes BMW's loyalty to the inherently balanced inline-6 engine. The long wheelbase, short overhangs, the passenger compartment set aft and the low, sleek roofline which seamlessly slopes into the trunk are all characteristics of the BMW Coupe and BMW retractable hardtop Convertible.
In addition to the classic proportions, three design lines-the shoulder, character and lower sill lines- enhance the sleek appearance. Both the shoulder line and character line stretch uninterrupted to the back of the car, allowing one's eye to move quickly and smoothly from front to rear along the entire length of the car. The sill line of the lower edge of the door flows into the front and rear air dams, reinforcing the dynamic nature of newest BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe.
The combination of lines flowing into one another elegantly emphasizes the vehicles' performance potential. While the shoulder line rises slightly but consistently from front to rear, the character line flows in a long, stretched arch all the way from the front fender to the new taillights. As the sill line, by contrast, moves up slightly to the rear in a slow and gentle curve, the distance between the character and sill lines becomes smaller near the rear wheel arches. The fender flare around each rear wheel also serves to give the character line extra tension in both an upward and outward direction.
Attractive new innovations at the front, side, and rear - integrated precisely into the overall look of the car- give greater emphasis to the sportiness of both models. At the same time, these modifications slightly extend the overhangs front and rear (now 1.14" and 0.12" longer, respectively), which adds a sleeker and even more athletic appearance.
The new, widened kidney grille, a signature feature of every BMW, suits the broad new hood and stands out from the surfaces around it. Interaction with the three-dimensional kidney frame creates a look of power and unique style. The frame around the kidney grille now features a chrome band precisely twisted within itself.
The BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe come standard in the U.S. with Xenon Adaptive Headlights, accented by BMW's signature corona light rings. At the top, the new headlights merge into a trim bar cutting off the light beam to create that concentrated, focused look typical of a genuine BMW. The corona rings, now powered by super-bright LED light sources, can serve as daytime running lights (if that feature is activated), and also as evening city lights, making the Convertible and Coupe instantly recognizable as a BMW, day or night. The upper edge of each headlight fixture is also illuminated by an LED light source.
The new design of the taillights is unique to the BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe. The rear light cluster feature two-piece L-shapes and are further accentuated by a new color scheme. With two rows of light tubes that illuminate simultaneously, they create a night design with depth and dimension. Integrated flush into the body of the car, the lights are split into two sections and extend up the trunk lid, blending with the character lines from the side profile. Horizontal LED tube taillights give the car an unmistakable look at night. The horizontal flowing lines accentuate the wide track and low stance of the Convertible and Coupe.
An additional horizontal contour line has been added to the rear air dam to further accentuate the width of the Convertible and Coupe. It creates light-and-shade effects to give the entire rear end a flatter and smoother appearance.
The exterior mirrors also receive a new design, adding further innovation to the unique looks of the BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe. They blend harmoniously into the side view and silhouette of each new model.
Deep Sea Blue Metallic, Vermillion Red Metallic, and Mineral White Metallic exterior colors will each become available for the new BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe this spring.
Interior: a truly stylish ambiance
The emphasis on individual style, dynamic performance and exclusivity continues within the interior. Here again, the focus is on the driving experience, as announced by the standard leather multifunction steering wheel. Horizontal lines dominate the surfaces on and around the instrument panel which blend with the lines of the center console door panels to give the interior a light but dynamic feel. In true BMW fashion, all operational and informational elements essential to driving are grouped on and around the steering wheel. Climate controls, as well as those for the audio and navigation systems, are within easy reach of the front passenger.
Because the Convertible and Coupe are four-passenger cars, the rear seat passengers are treated to a center console between their individual rear seats which includes individual storage boxes, additional air outlet vents, and footwell lights.
The BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe come standard with Dark Burl Walnut wood trim. As a choice, Bamboo Anthracite wood, Light Burl Walnut wood, and Aluminum trim are optional. Like the standard Dark Burl Walnut, these materials appear on the dash, front and rear consoles, doors and rear side panels.
The standard leatherette upholstery is available in Black and Creme Beige. For the optional leather upholstery, luxurious Dakota leather can be chosen. Here too, the buyer may choose Creme Beige, Oyster, Coral Red, Saddle Brown, Gray, or Black. Upholstery leather appears on the seat facings, door inserts and door handle surrounds; other leather-trimmed items include the gear shift boot, handbrake grip and steering wheel.
In other items of trim that don't change with upholstery or trim options, the interior door handles, gearshift surround trim, steering wheel spokes, instrument dial and engine Start/Stop button surrounds, dash air-outlet adjusting tabs and the optional iDrive controller are in pearl-gray galvanic material.
An elegant ambiance is further created in the interior by special lighting and switches with a premium look and feel. Ambiance lighting, streaming down from under the ledge on the door and side panels, and running from the A pillar all the way to the rear passenger area, creates a particularly warm, indirect lighting effect.
Through its design and configuration, the cabin emphasizes the sporting and driver-oriented character of the BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe. Taking a seat behind the steering wheel, the driver's eyes will immediately focus on the instrument cluster.
All-new turbocharged engine with Valvetronic for 335i
BMW 3-Series Convertible and Coupe customers have a choice of two inline-6 engines that are the worlds' finest. The 328i features 230 horsepower while the 335i has 300 horsepower and is the first inline-6 equipped with a single twin-scroll turbocharger, BMW's Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, High Precision direct fuel injection, and all-aluminum construction.
The 335i's new inline-6 engine displaces 3.0-liters and develops maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 lb-ft available all the way from 1,200-5,000 rpm. Redline is 7,000 rpm. This is the same level of performance as the previous 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 but with the innovation of twin-scroll technology and the integration of Valvetronic, this new engine is even more fuel efficient.
Historically, BMW engineers were never satisfied with the most often-cited downside to turbocharging: the frustrating "turbo lag" that occurs between the time at which driver presses the accelerator pedal and when the turbocharger develops sufficient rotation to increase power. Turbo lag is usually worse at low engine speeds. Other drawbacks included relatively high fuel consumption and poor emissions output. At the time, turbocharger technology was not a reliable, practical or efficient was to make power. For these and other reasons, BMW put turbocharged gasoline engines on the shelf for more than 20 years.
Two recent developments caused BMW to reconsider turbocharging. While many luxury-performance carmakers began to achieve power gains by building engines of ever-increasing displacement, BMW looked for a more efficient way; smaller engines and turbocharging made sense. Also, the technology transfer from BMW's turbocharged diesel engines could easily be transferred to their gasoline-fired counterparts. Accordingly, BMW articulated its new approach to developing high-performance engines as part of its EfficientDynamics initiative.
The new N55 is the first BMW inline-6 to combine turbocharging, High Precision direct fuel injection, and Valvetronic variable intake technology. It features a single, mid-sized turbocharger with a "twin-scroll" housing to boost performance and minimize the response lag. Thanks to its housing design which maintains proper separation between streams of exhaust gasses, the turbocharger builds up pressure much faster than previous-generation turbochargers, thus eliminating even the slightest tendency for lag.
A further advantage of turbocharging is that this is the most weight-efficient method to boost engine power and performance. The N55 turbocharged inline-6 weighs approximately 150 lbs. less than an equally powerful eight-cylinder engine displacing 4.0 liters. This lower weight means a significant advantage not only in fuel economy, but also in balancing the car's weight distribution.
Using Valvetronic for the first time on a turbocharged inline-6 allows the engine to "inhale" air for combustion with virtually no delay and with reduced pumping losses. As a result, the engine makes power more quickly than ever before, and this is proven by the N55's ability to reach peak torque at 1200rpm, 200rpm earlier than its predecessor.
As a result, the technology in the BMW 335i Convertible and Coupe represents a significant achievement in terms of both performance and fuel efficiency. The advantages over a conventional turbocharged engine are not only clearly measurable, but easy to feel on the road.
Turbocharging typically includes intercooling of the engine's induction air, that is, cooling the compressed air that emerges, very much heated up by the compression process, from the turbocharger(s). Sometimes it's done with coolant; in the case of the N55 engine, it's accomplished with outside air. Intercooling is necessary to reduce the temperature of the incoming air to preclude detonation or "knocking" that can reduce power or, in the extreme, damage the engine. Of course, the N55, like all other current BMW engines, is equipped with knock control as part of the Digital Motor Electronics (DME) engine management system. On the N55 engine, the DME is now mounted directly to the top of the engine for better packaging and weight savings.
The significant loads and cylinder pressures of the N55 300-hp engine required the use of an aluminum engine structure with cast-iron cylinder sleeves. Altogether, the N55 weighs about 427 lbs. The 335i Convertible and Coupe dual exhaust system runs at both sides of the vehicle. At low loads, a flap channels most gas through one side to reduce low-frequency exhaust "rumble." The 335i Convertible and Coupe feature an air-to-oil external oil cooler mounted in one wheel well as opposed to the N52's coolant-to-oil unit.
The peak power of 300 hp at 5800rpm has already been mentioned; this is fully 70 hp up on the 2011 328i models. At least as important is the fact that this engine can deliver its peak torque from 1200 rpm - not far above idling - to 5000 rpm. On the road, this power and torque result in outstanding performance. The 335i Convertible and Coupe can accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in just 5.3 (5.5) seconds and 5.5 (5.7) seconds, respectively, when equipped with the manual (automatic) transmission. The sense of urgency continues all the way to the electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (150 mph when equipped with the optional Sport Package). The 335i xDrive coupe accelerates 0-60 mph in 5.2 (5.3) seconds when equipped with the manual (automatic) transmission.
Finally, the new N55 engine is able to achieve a more favorable emissions signature than its predecessor. The single turbocharger has only one exhaust path and feeds a single catalytic converter in place of the previous engine's two. This means the exhaust gases are concentrated at the catalytic converter for better cold-start emissions performance, making the N55 a more environmentally friendly engine.
The 328i Convertible is powered by BMW's 230 horsepower, 200 lb-ft, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, known internally as the N52. Its magnesium/aluminum construction and Valvetronic variable valve lift are features found only on BMW engines. The N52 achieves impressive progress on all performance and technology fronts, especially in its remarkably light weight of 357 lbs. An aluminum/magnesium engine block, hollow camshafts, plastic camshaft cover, improved combustion chambers, a further evolved Double VANOS[1], higher fuel injection pressure, sophisticated engine electronics, an electric coolant pump, a variable-volume oil pump and an oil/coolant heat exchanger are the other weight-saving features and improvements of this engine over previous generations.
For the Coupes: Available xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
The 2011 BMW 335i xDrive Coupe combines intelligent all-wheel drive with the power of BMW's new 300-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. Likewise, the 2011 BMW 328i xDrive Coupe will impress with its 230-hp, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine featuring magnesium-aluminum construction. On smooth, dry roads BMW's xDrive gives a sporty, rear-wheel drive feel. But on a wet or snow-covered road, xDrive automatically sends more torque to the axle with more traction. BMW's xDrive is the most sophisticated and responsive all-wheel drive system on the market today. It has proven its merits, in terms of agility and safety, in the 19 BMW models currently offered with xDrive in the U.S.
For the Convertibles: Sun-Reflective Leather offers cooler seats
BMW is the first carmaker in the world to use sun-reflective technology to mitigate temperatures on leather seating, armrest surfaces, headrests, and gear shifter. The process uses modified color pigments imbedded in the leather during the production process to reflect the infrared radiation of the sun in wavelengths of more than 720 nanometers.
This leather treatment is able to reduce surface temperatures on dark interior colors by up to 20 Celsius degrees (36 Fahrenheit degrees), and also offers advantages on light-colored upholstery, where the heating effect of sunshine is less severe, reducing the surface temperature by as much as 15 Celsius degrees (27 Fahrenheit degrees). All other qualities of the leather remained unchanged.

Chevy SS to Debut in Daytona February 16

Chevy SS to Debut in Daytona February 16

By Mark McNabb on Thursday, February 7th, 2013

Chevrolet is scheduled to debut the SS performance sedan one week before the Daytona 500, says Jim Campbell, Chevy's Vice President of performance vehicles and motorsports.

The SS is the consumer version of the newest NASCAR Sprint Cup Chevrolet is racing and will be marketed as a low-volume sports sedan slotted above the Impala.

Not much is know about the details, but we know it's built on the Zeta platform that already underpins the Holden Commodore (think Pontiac G8), Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet PPV Police Interceptor. Power will likely come from the 6.2-liter V-8 already found in the other cars.

This marks the first time in 17 years that Chevy has offered a rear-wheel-drive sedan in the United States. The SS will be manufactured in Australia along side its corporate twins. It’s expected to go on sale in late 2013 as a 2014 model, and pricing will likely fall just above the starting price of a Chevy Impala of $27,535.

Stay tuned to Autotalk for our full-coverage of the SS unveiling on February 16.

BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo officially unveiled [videos added]

Debuts in Geneva

Following this morning's leak, BMW has officially unveiled the 3-Series Gran Turismo.

Set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the 3-Series GT combines the "sedan’s dynamic, sporting genes with the practicality and versatility of the Touring." While the model closely resembles the 5-Series GT, designers managed to soften some of the lines to give the hatchback a more cohesive appearance. Key styling highlights include a prominent grille, frameless windows and a sloping roofline that tapers all the way down to the rear end. There's also a large tailgate with an active spoiler that automatically raises at 110 km/h (68 mph) and retracts at speeds below 70 km/h (43 mph).

As with most new BMWs, the 3-Series GT can be equipped with Sport Line, Luxury Line or Modern Line styling packages. There's also an M Sport package that adds an aerodynamic body kit, shadow line trim, a sport-tuned suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Overall, the hatchback measures 200mm longer and 81mm taller than the Touring. It also rides on a wheelbase that has been extended by 110mm.

Interior changes are limited, but the model features raised seating positions and an extra 70mm of rear seat legroom. More notably, the boot holds 520 liters (18.3 cubic feet) of luggage which can be expanded to 1600 liters (56.5 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded down.

Under the hood, a variety of different engines are available. Choices include:

  • A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel with 143 HP (105 KW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel with 184 HP (135 KW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder with 184 HP (135 KW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder with 245 HP (180 KW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque
  • A 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six cylinder with 306 HP (225 KW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque

Regardless of which engine is selected, it can be paired to a six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic.

Volkswagen Beetle GSR Limited Edition unveiled in Chicago

Volkswagen Beetle GSR Limited Edition

Limited to 3,500 units

Volkswagen has unveiled the Beetle GSR Limited Edition at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

VW has decided to bring back the GSR moniker for the Beetle forty years after the classic model based on the 1303S made its debut. The new Gelb Schwarzer Renner (Yellow Black Racer) edition pays homage to the 70s' model and comes with a yellow/black paint scheme.

Power comes from an uprated version of the 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter EA888 turbocharged TSI engine producing 210 hp (156 kW). This engine will also be available for the Jetta GLI and Beetle Turbo starting 2013MY. In the Beetle GSR, the engine can be connected as standard to a 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

BMW 3-Series GT

Posted on 02.6.2013 11:00 by
Simona

The 5-Series GT is one of the most unsuccessful models BMW has ever offered. However, the company is bound and determined to get the GT formula right and has now expanding this option to new generation 3-Series.

The difference between the unsuccessful 5-Series GT and the new 3-Series GT is that the latter will drop the twin-door hatch design in favor of a normal one piece hatch. It will also be 7.87 inches longer than the standard model and offer the added bonus of more headroom due to the shooting brake layout. The four-door coupe designed body will combine a set of raised, sliding rear seats with a high lifting tailgate that should make accessing the larger cargo area very trouble-free. This formula may very well make the car a bit more successful than the 5-Series GT.

The official debut will be made next month at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

UPDATE 02/07/2013: This review has been updated with the official details, image and specs. Hit the jump to read more about the new BMW 3-Series GT.

Subaru Viziv Concept

Posted on 02.7.2013 11:00 by
Kirby Garlitos

The Geneva Motor Show is set to host one of the biggest showcases of concept cars for the entire year. It seems that every automaker is bringing a concept to the show and, as expected, that includes Japanese automaker Subaru.

One of Subaru’s concept offerings is the Viziv Crossover, a concept model that is expected to preview the next-generation styling language of Subaru’s crossover lineup along with new technologies that the automaker is fixing to use for its future models. Although there’s only one teaser image to look at, there are plenty of notable features about the Viziv Concept that you can take notice of. The most significant, obviously, are those outrageous slit-like LED headlights that, while awesome in concept guise, we’re not entirely sure will ever make it past the concept phase. A trapezoidal grille is also prominently shown in the teaser as is what looks like a front spoiler.

It’ll be interesting to see what Subaru did with the Viziv Crossover Concept. The early returns are definitely promising and if we do say so ourselves, we’re looking forward to seeing the whole thing when the Geneva Motor Show opens its doors in a month’s time.

Subaru Viziv Concept originally appeared on topspeed.com on Thursday, 7 February 2013 11:00 EST.

2014 Corvette to debut in January

2014 Chevy Corvette

An all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, the seventh generation of the uniquely American sports car in six decades, will make its debut January 13 on the eve of the North American International Auto Show, General Motors’ Chevrolet brand said on Thursday.

Eagerly awaited by auto enthusiasts, the new Corvette – dubbed C7 by the faithful but known to GM and its suppliers by the development code Y1XX – is widely expected to have a radically restyled exterior, a more upscale interior, a lighter chassis, and a more efficient engine and transmission.

There will be a 6-month gap between the 2014 Corvette new C7 and the current C6 version, a Chevrolet spokesman said in an email. GM will stop building the 2013 model in early February, and is due to start producing the 2014 model in volume in July.

The first of the new C7 Corvettes is expected to roll off the line in Bowling Green on June 30 – 60 years to the day that the first 1953 model was produced, according to two suppliers familiar with the automaker’s plans but are not authorized to speak on behalf of GM.

The C7′s formal unveiling in mid-January also marks the anniversary of the Corvette’s debut in January 1953 as a GM Motorama “dream car” concept in New York. Since then, GM has built and sold more than 1.5 million Corvettes, although annual sales have slowed in recent years as higher vehicle prices, rising fuel and insurance costs, and growing competition from Europe and Asia have eroded its once fiercely loyal owner base.

To rekindle interest in the Corvette, especially among younger, affluent buyers who tend to favor imported brands, Chevrolet has completely overhauled the car for the first time since the sixth-generation model was launched in July 2004.

The result, according to chief engineer Tadge Juechter, is “a truly all-new Corvette. There are only two carryover parts from the C6 used in the C7 – the cabin air filter and the rear latch for the removable roof panel.”

Chevrolet even has redesigned the Corvette’s familiar crossed-flags emblem for the 2014 model.

Other significant upgrades, according to the supplier sources, include a smaller, lighter aluminum V8 engine displacing around 5.5 liters, advanced features such as direction injection, cylinder cutoff and variable valve timing, and a new seven-speed manual transmission for improved fuel economy.

Prices, due to be announced next summer, are expected to range from just under $55,000 for the base model to nearly $120,000 for the top-of-the-line Corvette ZR1.

Chevrolet said dealers will continue to take orders for the current model until December.

2013 Ford Focus ST

2013 Ford Focus ST

By now you’ve probably heard about something from Ford called “Ecoboost.” It’s a series of turbocharged engines that, depending on how the company wants to spin the propaganda, is either a way to stretch fuel dollars, or a way to give your right foot a good workout.

Put an Ecoboost four-cylinder in a seven-passenger Ford Explorer tall wagon and you have a docile mileage champ. Put roughly the same engine in a Ford Focus and fuel performance plays a quiet second fiddle to acceleration, turning and stopping performance.

It’s one bookend in a rather diverse line. At one end, the Electric model represents all things lean, clean and green. At the other, the new ST, arriving soon, is positioned as the quintessential driver’s car for the budget-minded.

Both models come in hatchback formats only. Middle-ground mainstream versions of the Focus can be had in either sedan or hatch variants. The ST owes its existence to Ford’s European-based Team RS performance group working cooperatively with the automaker’s SVT (Special Vehicle Team), which are engineers in North America responsible for breathing life into the Mustang-based Shelby GT500 and SVT Raptor pickup.

For the ST, that life force involves the installation of a 252-horsepower 2.0-liter Ecoboost turbocharged four-cylinder (torque is 270 pound-feet). That’s way up from 160 horses and 146 pound-feet of torque available in non-turbocharged base models of identical engine displacement.

Ford claims the ST is capable of zero-to-60-mph sprints in the low-six-second range, which is about two seconds quicker than a standard Focus hatch. Official fuel-consumption numbers are 23 mpg city and 32 highway, compared with 26/30 for a base Focus with a manual gearbox. That’s impressive considering the extra thrust. In true sports-car tradition, the only transmission mated to the turbo is a six-speed manual.

Along with literally boosting the 2.0′s output for ST duty, the RS/SVT gang strengthened and stiffened the Focus platform and lowered the ride height 0.4 inches. The shocks and springs are stiffer for more control, plus the front anti-roll bar is larger in diameter, which limits body lean while cornering.

New variable-ratio power-steering makes the ST a bit sharper, while torque-vectoring control applies light inside front-wheel braking force in the turns for improved agility. And let’s not forget the beefed-up brakes designed to more effectively arrest the 3,220-pound ST’s momentum.

Visual flavor is similarly beefed up with a front spoiler, chrome-trimmed headlamps and a mesh-style grille. There’s also extra rocker-panel trim along the sides. The bumper containing the exhaust outlets and tinted taillamps are both exclusive to the ST, as is the optional roof spoiler designed to reduce drag as well as aid in overall stability. The exterior is finished off with a set of distinctive 18-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle summer skins.

The interior is available with Recaro-branded front seats that provide significant side bolstering. An extra-thick steering wheel is complemented by a trio of gauges displaying turbo boost pressure and oil pressure and temperature. They’ve been assigned to a special spot on the upper portion of the instrument panel, while down low are metal foot pedals.

ST passengers should also get a kick out of what Ford calls a Sound Symposer that allows the “confident growl” from the sport exhaust system to infiltrate the cabin.

For a starting price of $24,500 (including destination charges), the ST includes most of the desired performance goodies, but skips a few of the niceties including a split-folding rear seat. That item is optional, along with a navigation system, dual-zone climate control and other must-want features.

Perhaps the best part of the Focus ST is that it places its considerable sizzle within reach of a good percentage of the population. Whether they feel like eco-warriors with “Ecoboost” under the hood – or road warriors – that means there are at least two good reasons to buy in.

What you should know: 2013 Ford Focus ST
Type: Four-door, front-wheel-drive compact hatchback
Engine (hp): 2.0-liter DOHC I4, turbocharged (252)
Transmission: Six-speed manual
Market position: Producing a performance version of a particular vehicle is a common approach taken by automakers seeking to highlight potential. Such aspirational cars also help build interest among more youthful buyers.
Points: Turbocharged engine has plenty of guts; Six-speed manual as sole transmission limits buyer interest, but perhaps that’s the point; ST suspension upgrades should be made optional across the line; Keeping most dress-up features optional helps keeps price in affordable zone; A muscle car for the 21st century; Still “Eco” despite added power.
Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control.
MPG (city/hwy): 23/32
Base price (incl. destination): $24,500

2013 BMW 320i price starts at $33445

2013 BMW 320i

It’s powerful, has a prestige name and by luxury sport sedan standards, it’s cheap.

The starting price for the BMW 320i will be $33,445, including destination charges, when it goes on sale in the spring. That’s nearly $3,000 less than the current cheapest 3-series model, the 328i.

BMW, which has had big sales for its redone 3-series entry line, is hoping that a cheaper, four-cylinder model will spell more success. Today, it unveiled a new BMW 320i model here at the auto show.

The sporty compact packs a 2.0-liter, 180-horsepower, twin-turbo, four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The engine also comes with start-stop technology that shuts it off at stoplights to save gas.

It will be offered in standard rear-drive and all-wheel drive versions.

2014 Kia Forte Sedan

2014 Kia Forte Sedan

Just three-and-a-half years after it launched the original Forte, Kia has created an all-new one. That haste is a clear indication of how competitive the compact-sedan segment has become and, perhaps more telling, a sign of how competitive Kia has become. The original Forte was sharp and packed a fun personality. No other compact offered an audio system whose speakers lit up with each bass beat. But the old Forte lack the fine-detail refinement found at the top of the segment. Kia had to up its game.

The all-new Forte is based upon the same mechanicals as the Hyundai Elantra; the platform-mates have an identical 106.3-inch wheelbase. Also shared is the design of the strut front and twist-beam rear suspension, though Kia engineers have tuned that suspension to suit the Forte. Both engines from the outgoing model are gone. Beneath the hood of the new base LX model is the same 148-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder paired to the same six-speed transmissions that Hyundai uses in all Elantras. The difference here is that, for now, only the Kia Forte EX gets a 2.0-liter direct-injected four-cylinder with 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic. That engine makes the same power as the outgoing 2.4-liter.

The new Forte isn't merely a slick design with an additional engine choice. Engineers went to the mat to make the Kia quiet, with loads of extra sound-deadening material in the bodywork, on the floor, and even an upgraded acoustic mat behind the dash that Kia says is the same type used to combat diesel clatter.

Tech Tidbit: Kia's UVO eServices telematics system, co-developed with Microsoft, doesn't offer concierge service like you get from OnStar and others. But it does provide a car-care portal through the Web. It can check vehicle diagnostics, receive Google Maps directions sent from the phone to the nav system, connect to emergency services if an airbag deploys, and even help you find where you've parked your car. What's really sweet is that this system comes with no monthly service fee. It's free for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Driving Character: To these eyes, the Kia Forte is the best looking car in the compact segment. It's impressive that a designer can make a compact sedan stand out in a sea of sameness. Perhaps that's why Kia has promoted its chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, to run its U.S. operations.

The real beauty of the new Forte is under the metal. We drove exclusively fully loaded EX models, and on this top-level Forte it took only a few minutes behind the wheel to notice the refinement improvement. Compared to the old car, and even the Elantra, this Kia is incredibly hushed. In most cars with a direct-injection engine like the Forte EX's, occupants will hear the clicking of the high-pressure fuel pump at idle. Not here. It's a major improvement over the original Forte, a car that, if we're honest, was a little boomy.

Peg the throttle and the EX is deceptively quick. The old 2.4-liter, with 14 more lb-ft of torque, was about as quick as other compacts, and the new engine should be good for a similar mid 7-second 0-to-60 time. You just wouldn't know by the way it feels. Less exciting is the engine note, which starts to drone as it approaches the redline, so perhaps this is a car geared more for comfort than speed.

The Forte's suspension does a solid job of soaking up the big bumps while remaining poised enough for moderately quick canyon work. Kia's engineers say they benchmarked the Ford Focus for their suspension tuning, and it seems as though they've come close to hitting that mark. Sharper-edged impacts are more noticeable, at least audibly, than the Ford, but that's probably because the Forte EX wears aggressive 215/45R17 tires with little sidewall cushioning. Kia's new FlexSteer system comes as an option on the EX. It's largely the same system Hyundai uses to provide comfort, normal, and sport steering modes for the electric power steering system. Those modes are less distinct here than on the last Elantra GT we drove.

On the inside, Kia put soft-touch materials where it counts-in the spots where your elbows hit or are likely to hit. Our car came with the optional heated front seats and cooled driver's seat (an option not found on other compacts). Rear-seat leg- and headroom is plentiful, even for a six-footer, and though the aft seats have an oddly aggressive lumbar support, overall comfort is impressive. Our EX even had a heated rear seat.

Favorite Detail: The cooled glovebox isn't a breakthrough. But when we encounter the feature on a long drive, we appreciate it. It's great to have a place to keep your drinks cool on a road trip.

Driver's Grievance: We appreciate the idea of a small, relatively inexpensive, and fuel-efficient car delivering lots of luxury-level equipment. But an optional cooled seat for the driver alone is just silly. If the driver gets one, shouldn't the passenger get one too? We could make a case that keeping your co-pilot cool and comfy is exponentially more important.

Bottom Line: The Forte is a solid leap forward for Kia. This stylish sedan is on par with the best in the compact class. So what's next for the Forte? Expect to see a coupe version unveiled at an upcoming auto show, perhaps with turbocharged power under the hood.

Price: $16,000 to $20,000 (est.)

Radical change

A WCF reader has sent us a batch of spy photos with the upcoming 2013 Citroen C4 Picasso.

Looking a lot different than the outgoing model, the new generation of the C4 Picasso features rather unique split headlamp and turn signals clusters, a look which makes us think of the Nissan Juke but with a better design.

It also sports the firm's latest double chevron grille and has a beefy chrome frame running around the edges of the three large side glasses, while the less innovative back has Volkswagen Golf-inspired LED taillights.

The new C4 Picasso will ride on the EMP2 platform (Efficient Modular Platform 2) developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen which makes use of high-strength steel, aluminum and composites. Thanks to this change, the new model could be 154 lbs (70 kg) less heavy than its predecessor.

Thanks to Stéphane Rousseau for sending the pics!

ForTwo+2 planned

A mule of the next-gen Smart ForTwo has been spied recently by our photographers.

The 2014 ForTwo will retain its RWD layout but will share its platform with the 2014 Renault Twingo. No news right now about engine lineup but will probably include a 64 hp (48 kW) two-cylinder gasoline unit and an electric powertrain generating 87 hp (65 kW). The styling is expected to include bigger headlights, a perforated front grille and a Tridion Safety cell, while the interior cabin should boast a removable navigation system.

Smart also plans on launching the ForTwo+2 which will ride on the same platform but feature an elongated wheelbase and rear doors. Its design will be similar to the regular model and could be offered with a more powerful 3-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine producing 84 hp (63 kW) and 104 hp (77 kW).

Towards the end of 2015, Smart plans on launching a Nissan Juke-based crossover with several gasoline and diesel engines making up to 148 hp (110 kW).

Audi has dropped the official details on its updated R8 family, and, much to everyone’s surprise, the company has added a new top model to the line-up: a 550 HP R8 V10 Plus. This new model has received a 25 HP increase over the standard V10 version which develops 525 HP. The new R8 Plus will go on sale at the end of 2012 at a starting price of 173,200 euro, about $210,000 at the current exchange rates.

Compared to the rest of the R8 line-up, the new Plus version will be distinguished by carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) additions in just about every angle of the sports car, including the front splitter, lateral air inlets, the huge rear diffuser, the lining in the engine compartment. The intense use of carbon fiber has helped drop the car’s total weight to an impressive 3461.26 lbs.

In addition to these features, the vent louvers next to the rear window have been painted in matte black, while the dual round exhaust tailpipe trim sections have been finished in gloss black. The new R8 V10 Plus also features LED lights that illuminate the engine compartment.

Updated 02/06/2013: Today Audi has unveiled a new promo video for its latest addition to the lineup: the R8 V10 Plus. Equipped with a new 7-speed dual-clutch S tronic gearbox, this car delivers incredible performance figures!

Holden VF Commodore teased, debuts February 10th [video]

Holden will slowly reveal the model as part of a contest

Holden has released the first teaser image of the VF Commodore, ahead of its debut on February 10th.

As part of the build up for the car's unveiling, Holden has hidden 101 "virtual puzzle pieces" across the internet and Australia. Registered users can "find" the pieces, beginning February 6th, which will help to reveal what the model will look like. They will also be entered into a contest to win a VF Commodore.

Holden has been relatively tight-lipped about the redesigned Commodore, but it was recently previewed by the Chevrolet SS race car that will compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Holden Chairman Mike Devereux has also hinted the model will come with "new fuel-saving, connectivity and safety technologies."

Engine options remain a mystery, but we can expect a variety of V6 and V8 options. There have also been rumors of a high-performance HSV variant which could use a detuned version of the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that resides in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Mercedes sold 22,501 cars in January

Mercedes-Benz has taken an early lead in the 2013 U.S. luxury car sales race against BMW.

2012 was an intense year in luxury sales in the United States as the battle between Mercedes-Benz and BMW was extremely close, with the latter taking the win with just 7,326 cars sold more than Mercedes.

Circumstances might change this year as Mercedes-Benz is now in first place after selling 22,501 cars in January, representing an 11 percent increase. A large part of the sales boost has to do with the C-Class sedan as deliveries of this model rose by 11 percent to 7,214 units.

As for BMW, their sales went up by 0.7 percent to 16,513 cars, helped by a significant 56 percent gain for the X5. Toyota's sales rose by 32 percent to 16,211, thanks to ES sedan deliveries which more than doubled to 5,186 vehicles.

These numbers do not include Mercedes-Benz's cargo vans and Smart cars, nor do they contain BMW's MINI sales since these cars are not luxury vehicles.

As part of the car's introduction, Infiniti will show off several new powertrains that are a result of their partnership with Daimler. The company withheld further details, but Bernard Loire - Infiniti's Vice President of Africa, the Middle East and Europe (AMIE) - hinted “The Infiniti Q50 is a world-class sports saloon with an engine line-up that will clearly demonstrate its intentions to be a major player within the European premium market."

Detailed specifications won't be released until March 5th, but previous reports have indicated we can expect a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine as well as a four-cylinder diesel engine.

Mercedes G63 AMG inspired Cigarette 42' Huntress 05.2.2013

Debuts at the Miami International Boat Show

Mercedes has teamed with the Cigarette Racing Team to develop a 42 Huntress that draws inspiration from the G63 AMG.

Set to debut at the Miami International Boat Show, the Huntress features AMG badging as well as a luxurious deck with diamond-stitched leather seats. The boat's cabin is relatively tight but comes nicely equipped with a galley and a day bed.

Power is provided by five Mercury Racing Verado 350SCi engines that each develop 350 bhp (263 kW). This enables the model to hit a top speed of up to 78 mph (125 km/h) which is pretty impressive for a 42' long boat that weighs 18,900 lbs (8,572 kg).

As we have previously reported, Mercedes has a long history of working with the Cigarette Racing Team. In the past few years, they have jointly-developed boats inspired by the SLS AMG and C63 AMG Black Series.

Audi Threw Zing at Mercedes After SuperBowl Outage

Posted on 02.3.2013 06:00 by

Leave it to Audi to take advantage of an opportunity to get some digs on a rival automaker.

With the unexpected Super Bowl power outage taking well over 30 minutes to get resolved, the German automaker decided to throw a grenade Mercedes' way. In case you didn’t know, the Superdome is officially titled as the Mercedes SuperBowl by way of Merc’s sponsorship of the dome.

So with the lights out, Audi went to Twitter to send a hilarious tweet Mercedes’ way. Here’s what it said:

"Sending some LEDs to the @MBUSA Superdome right now..."

Shots fired! Shots fired!

To be fair, the lights did come back on, but it was still another ingenious dig by an automaker that’s fast becoming one of the must-follow Twitter accounts in the industry. Remember their previous shots at Acura and its NSX Concept for "spiking" the design of the 1991 Quattro Spyder?

This Mercedes zing, though, is a lot funnier than that one.

Video: Fast and Furious 6 Trailer Goes Live

Kirby Garlitos

We know Justin Lin (no relation to Jeremy Lin) is directing Fast and Furious 6, but is it at all possible that his body has been taken over by Michael Bay?

See, the first official trailer of Fast and Furious 6 has just gone live and, while we did enjoy the spectacle of seeing Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and the crew back, we couldn’t help but also notice that the trailer probably had more explosions than any of the first five movies combined.

Nevertheless, we also get a preview of what the plot for the movie is going to be, which is kind of a buzz kill in itself. So, the Rock and XXX are tag-team partners now?

Really, where’s the fun in that if you’ve got the two meatiest dudes on one side against, you know, a tank.

Ok, we take that back. This trailer is awesome.
